Hello!
I’m back with another travel post from my trip back in September. I was debating whether it was too late to post more about this trip, but I decided that I would be disappointed if I didn’t.
Ireland stole all our hearts, and I find myself getting a bit misty every time I go through my photos.
We left Dublin mid-morning on Sunday, September 21st. It was a gray, misty morning, as we set out the drive from Dublin to Doolin. It’s about a three-hour drive, but we took it slow, stopping here and there to take in the gorgeous scenery. The great thing about not having a time constraint on your travels as you can stop anywhere for as long as you like, one of my favorites was Kilmacduagh Abby.
This first thing that led us to this site is the Round Tower. This tower has a noticeable lean. The tower leans outward approximately 2 feet at the top.
Kilmacduagh is located near Gort, Co. Galway. It was founded in the 7th century as a monastery, then re-established in the 13th century as an Augustinian Abby.
It sits on the edge of the Burren, in the medieval period, it was known as Uí Fiachrach Aidhne. A Dominant local dynasty that stretched from the Atlantic coast to the mountains of the Burren. By the twelfth century, Kilmacduagh had an enclosed settlement with the main church at the center, at least three subsidiary churches and, of course, the tower.
The rest of the drive, we only stopped a few more times to check out interesting things we passed.
We arrived in Doolin in the early evening, checked into our bed and breakfast, and took another drive a short distance down the coast.
